Moroccan Tattoos
12:00:00 AM Saturday Aug 9, 2003

Do you have one? Does anyone in your familly have one? where? what does it mean to you to have a tattoo if you want to have one? what did it mean to the old Moroccan generation to have tribal or fashion tattoos?

Are you against tattoos? why?

Would you get a tatoo?

Pictures & text are from the book "Tribal Tattoo Designs" by Maarten Hesselt van Dinter, Pepin Press. Maarten has a collection of 2000 drawings, pictures and more than 1000 books and articles on cultural anthropology and tattooing. So far he has found more than 110 cultures that one time or another practiced tattooing. Pictures used with kind permission.

I have my name in arabic on my back surrounded with a berber design and that's surrounded with a henna design. In Islam it's looked down upon to get anything tattoo'd. I'm not Muslim so it's not a problem for me. It's a symbol of my culture, my heritage and my famity. I wear it proudly as it's bold in color and in meaning!!!

I have debated about that issue so many times myself as i really enjoyed the art and was considering getting one, i even designed the art and was ready to do it but still in the back of my head i felt that it was wrong. i looked around for an excuse to get it by asking the same questions you guys are asking; where does it say it's haram and who said it and why.
i came across this site: http://www.answering-christianity.com/tattoos.htm
among a few i read and to be honest with u, i don't need to look further. i quickly came to the conclusion that why do i need to risk disobeying my prophet and risk commiting a huge sin when i could just as easily forget about that desire of having a stupid tattoo.
weigh your options brothers and sisters and stop been so stuborn.

k, guys and gals, lets see if we can stop from making foolish arguments. First off, I'm a muslim living in Canada and I'm all for tattoos. I plan on getting one (hopefully), basically it'll be my first name spelled in Arabic, above my left bicep. I'm not going to bother saying why I want one because the topic is not "why" someone wants it, its if the person is "allowed" to have it.

Now, nowhere in the Qur'an is it written the tattoos are prohibited. I believe that the hadiths, although originally written with good intentions, have been modified and changed to the benifits of whoever changed them. We muslims pride ourselves for following the Qur'an because it is the UNCHANGED word of God, but nothing like this has been said about hadiths.

You may be tempted to throw verses from the Qur'an at me that say how God tells us to follow what His prophets say, but I can simply throw verses from the Qur'an back at you mentioning how God specifically warns us against OTHER scriptures that try to imitate God's words, but are not so. It is written in the Qur'an that God says that the Qur'an is absolute and does not need any accompanying scriptures, and I would hold the Qur'an's words above anything you can say to me.

Now, if you have a VALID argument that you can BACK UP with the Qur'an, feel free to shoot me down. Otherwise, don't bother, because you won't be changing my mind.

We live in a society where a person is innocent until proven guilty. I am going to do something that I believe is right, and I am still innocent. PROVE me guilty.

I am the author of the book Tribal Tattoo Design and my latest The World of Tattoo. If you read chapter Africa and The Middle East you will notice that almost every Arabic and Islamic person was tattooed. The Koran does not mention tattoos at all, nor forbid body decoration. Tattoos were used to ward off evil spirits, for medical healing but foremost to enhance once beauty.

I had seen this topic before, a friend and user of raioo Ayne, sent me the link when i was looking for pictures of traditional moroccon tattoos.

I have a tattoo, it's in my upper back, a tribal quraishi hawk which i designed myself, the wings spread on the omoplates.

I honestly don't see how a tattoo can be 7aram.

I'm getting a second one on my next trip to morocco, I'm still looking for information on moroccan traditional tatooing.

To me it means alot, a link to my culture carved in skin.

I have heard of the hadith before and have no reason to doubt its authenticity. I still don't know the exact reason why tatoos were banned. But then again, they've only become legal here in Massachussetts about 2 years ago ro so.

I have always wanted a tatoo though since I was very young. Perhaps it was sign of rebelion and wanting to exert mastery over my own body. They tend to look saggy once you grow older. Our barber back in Oujda used to have one on his fore-arm that had a nice sword; it also had the word "mother" in Arabic. He was a rugged character thgouh and I am sure there was a reason why he had that tatoo.

If I ever have one, it would have to be inscribed in Arabic; perhaps a word that I really like: ihsan, which bears a significant faith meaning particularly in the sufi world. Then again, people might think it's the name a girlfirend or something ;-)

Jah bless

There is no point of arguing when people don't share a common ground for discussion. We 'muslims' base our actions on the teachings of our religion and this is where we derive our decisions. Obviously, it is not the same for you, therefore on this basis, you can do anything in the world you want to, because you are not abiding yourself to any system of values. So, I can only sincerly say to you (no sarcarstic tone here): Allah Yehdik Insh'Allah.

What's wrong with us Moroccans? Have we lost til the last drop of our religious values. I read comments where people just don't want to admit, don't want to hear that Tatooos are haram. There is a hadith that specifically prohibits this. And now I hear people saying : where does it say so in quran? Whats wrong in it anyways? Allah will judge each person......... I am always amazed at people's ability to justify their own actions. Just ADMIT thats it's haram in religion, and now if you still think you like it and you want it, then it's your decision. Thanks Allah, each of us will have his/her own grave. No one will share your grave with you. But please stop justifying things that we know for a fact are HARAM. Rest is your choice.

I am Moroccan-American, and when I was 21 (5 years ago) I got my name in Arabic tattooed onto the inside of my right wrist. I designed it myself as a way of expressing who I am as an Arab. Everyone who sees it likes it (even those who think it's haram ;) ), and it always sparks great conversations about my background and about what it means to be an Arab in the U.S. I have not regretted getting my tattoo for a single second, and I think it only enhances my beauty.

Another issue: Why would you think getting a tattoo is haram but getting a nose job or breast implants is not? Every time I go back to Morocco, I see that more and more women are having plastic surgery, yet I hear nobody condemning this practice as haram.

Remember that calling tattoos haram without being willing to entertain others' interpretations of the Qur'an may just have been another way for the Muslim Arabs who originally conquered the Maghreb to keep the Berbers marginalized (and therefore under their control).

I just think it's worth understanding that there are many interpretations of Islam, and around the world you'll find that Muslims practice in very different ways. If you're not willing to recognize that, then you're being just as close-minded as those ridiculous French legislators who want to ban the hijab from public schools!

Tattoos!! I usually hate to disagree or give an opinion about subjects I'm not aware of.
therefore I will just say that :as a Moroccan i heard since i was a child that is Haram.
but again we hear a lots of things in our environment.
to me with the respect to all others.having a tattoo is changing the perfect image that God made , and want it to be respected, plus whatever you do to get red of it ,you never gonna be successful .so why taking a risk of something you can not back up from if you decided to.
soooooooooooo think and think and think.and again it is your own body and you will be judge for it all by your self .boooooooooo7ditek

well people, maybe tattoos are haram, but nobody can prove it yet. it's just your concious, you want to get a tattoo? it's your own body, take a risk if you don't know if it's haram or not. God said innama al a3malou bi'niyat. you're not gettin a tattoo caz people get it just for the heck of it or they belong to a certain clan. i have 3 tattoos. before i got my first one, i was scared, and i was like what if they are haram? nobody could prove it to me, so i just went ahead and got. i wanted to get that tattoo caz i wanted to have something to remind me moments from that vacation in ibiza, i wanted something more than pictures or memories. that's why i decided to get that tattoo, caz everytime i see it, it brings me those memories and i picture those moments, and plus it's something that really believe it represents MY prosonality. i did not get to perople to see it, that ask me, why you have this tattoo on your arm and these ones on your back? it's poeple's problem! if you can't see my tattoo, deal with it, and am not showing it off.
anyways, i do fear god you guys, and i know am not the only one on this line. what am just talkin about is that follow you intuition, if you gonna feel more stable in your mind? go get it, don't get something quick, just think about it a lot, caz it's not something you undo easily, you have to love it.
We all never know what GOD thinks of us and how judges our dos, but i know that god is right in all decisions.
if i took the wrong path, i just prey to god to forgive me for being blind.

what is the proof from the Coran that Tatoo is haram? we need a sourat that say: tatoo is haram or something similar.
My mom has one and it was a sign of beauty, long time ago, berbers used to make tatoos on thier females' bodies as a sign of beauty, and every region has a special design, any body can notice the diffrent designs, I think even every Cabila used to have a related tatoo.
Me personally, I got one and I like it, and nobody proved to me with a sourat from the Coran that Allah forbids it.

Thank you and god bless you all.

tattoos, are the result of going beyound all restrictions.for women as for men, we live in an age where man in general is no more satisfied with make -up , attractive clothes or hair style, it is a quest for mystery, the unknown, wearing tattoos is replacing the body or the flesh with sth odd, that would replace the normality of man's conciousness, it proves the lack of satisfaction of one's condition.a desire to be diferent or even further more, a thirst to encounter the real i and locate it by putting a tattoo.the result, tattoos are forbidden by god, for sure he has his own reasons ....

That was here in Boston. I was actually starting to get good at it. Then a woman was getting engaged, saw the henna on her friend's fingers so they invited me again.. hihihihihhih. It's been a while

I always found tribal tattoos in Morocco fascinating! I only know that it's more popular among women, and I could only notice the tattoo designs in the forehead and in the "manton" underneath the mouth... but recently I read that their body could hide many more :) in most unexpected places.

I think that it's art, it's an artistic expression to enhance the look of your body, to support some kind of belief you have... but I never liked those exgerrated tattoos harley-davinson fans type, machos, chinese bandits, or tattoos that cover all body, snakes and what have you, they're scary and unattractive!. I especially dislike the colored ones!

At any rate, I wouldn't get a tattoo, but if I were to get one I'll choose to have it in either one of 2 places:

* On top of my back along the lines my shoulders..

* on the bottom of my back..

Design will be something light, a few lines, my own design most likely, something in the middle between celtic and Moroccan geometric lines.
