11:36:07 AM Wednesday Oct 31, 2007

For all the Moros in the US, be civic, celebrate Halloween :) .. and do so a la Marocaine! Today you're particularly lucky because I've got just what you need. I've got the man that tells you the stories that make your brain trip. I introduce to you none but a character that few will come to understand.. and in my opinion, he's on a league of his own. Put your fingers together, sit tight on your seats, manipulate that tiny laptop gummy pointer or grab that mouse, and click on the play button 2 inches down under, and watch a October 30-first Halloween SPECIAL 2007 a la Marocaine: Death of a Mouse! by Ezzehar.

3abirSabil,

What is the story of Herrrrma Taïsh Taïsh? I know the expression because I used to hear it from ancient people like my mother. It always sounded funny to me and to others. The object of fun seemed to be the person called Herrrma Taïsh Taïsh. What is the story of Herrrma Taïsh Taïsh ?

Many moroccans(muslims or even Jews) don't know that Pesah is a national feast(Look at ancient moroccan calendar). It is celebrated in spring and last eight days during which unleavened bread must be eaten(did you tasted r9a9a before??It's like paper.BeurrrK!!).The most important and characteristic ceremony of pesah is the evening meal of the"seder":the ritual meal must consist of :
-3 loaves of unleavened bread
-Parsely or bitter herbs
-A mixture of fruit and spices
-A glass of salted water
-An egg cooked hard in the ashes
Moroccan custom also decrees that one place must be reserved to be offred at the last minute to an unknown guest.
Many moroccan jews don't know about this. They stare at me when I tell them about it.

Please read the first paragraph in my previous comment as follows:

I looked into the internet and found out that there are 7 fast days in the jewish calendar. One of them is Pesach (Passover).

Today is : 24 Cheshvan 5768 in the Jewish calendar.
(5 November 2007).

I looked into the internet and found out that there are 7 fast days in the jewish calendar but no one was said to be commemorating Moses escape from Pharaoh. One of them is Pesach (Passover)

Probably the most significant observance related to Pesach involves the removal of chametz (leaven; sounds like "hum it's" with that Scottish "ch") from the jews' homes. This commemorates the fact that the Jews leaving Egypt were in a hurry, and did not have time to let their bread rise.

The excerpt from the following page:

http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:Tq5lbVGovpQJ:kashkool.livejournal.com/81020.html+Moses+escape+from+Pharaoh+fast+day&hl=fr&ct=clnk&cd=16&gl=ma

gives the explanations to our question in a previous comment: the day of Prophet Muhammed's arrival in Medinah (10th of Muharram) was just a coincidence with the Jewish fast day Pesach. Here is the excerpt from the above indicated page where the coincidence is obvious:

..."Under guidance from God, the Israelites fled Egypt; while the Pharaoh and his men pursued them. It seemed like their journey would end at the Red Sea which prevented their escape.

But a miracle happened when Moses struck the water with his staff: The waves of the Red Sea parted and the Israelites hurried along the passage between the parted waves. Pharaoh and his soldiers followed; but by the time the Israelites reached the other shore, the sea closed in engulfing their pursuers. Thus the Israelites were delivered from bondage, and the Pharaoh and his people perished.

Muslims are in sympathy with the Jewish celebration of the Pesach*, as the fast on `Ashura' amply demonstrates. When the Prophet Muhammad came to Madinah on the tenth of the lunar month of Muharram, he found that the Jews there were fasting.

The Prophet asked them why they were fasting on this day, and they explained that it was the day that God saved the Children of Israel from the Pharaoh, and that Moses fasted in thanks on this day. The Prophet said, "We have more claim to Moses than you." He fasted on that day and commanded Muslims to fast on the day. (Al-Bukhari)"

I have no idea about jewish calendar.
Yes,there is a formula to translate a gregorien year (GY)to hejir year(HY):
GY=HY-[3xHY/100]+621,6.
Before Islam,arab months were as folow:1:al Mo2tamar, 2:Najir,3:Khiwan,4:Wabsane,5:7anin,6:Rabi,7:Assamm,8:3adil,9:Nafi9, 10:Waghil,11:Hawa3, 12:Bark.
Before Islam, arabs use to remember their history according to great events like the building of ka3ba by Ibrahim and Ismaïl,the destruction of Ma2rib dam in Yemen,"3am al fil" when Abraha al7abachi tryed to destroy with elephants al ka3ba and the birth of the prophet Mohammed(etc). The Mesopotamian deluge and the read sea crossing are also big events. But I have no idea how to put these events in an exact calendar.
I think that the most important in 3acoura is its symbols and what are we celebrating.I find this feast very intersting because it's an amazing melting pot that mixes religions(Judaïsm,Christianism,Islam) and pagan belief(worshiping fire, water, devils, animals). It is a feast for adults and children, men and women. The life is mixed with death, the joy with sadness and the joke go togather with the seriousness. It's a feast for human being with all of its pradoxes. In Morocco 3achoura must be celebrated in a huge festival better than we do know(Halloween is an example to folow).

3abirSabil,

Let me start with the following SUBTOPIC:
"The rescue of Moises from Pharaoh (the crossing of the red sea)"

3achoura is on the 10th of Muharrem which will fall next year sometime in early January. Right?. What will be the exact corresponding date in the Gregorian calender?

In your comment of the 3d of November, you mentioned "The rescue of Moises from Pharaoh (the crossing of the red sea)". I confess that I never knew of such a link with 3achoura. I recently found an explanation of this:

It seems that when the Prophet Sidna Mohamed arrived in Medina, he noticed that jews fasted the day of 3achoura (I don't know wether they called it 3achoura yet) and he learned that jews did fast that day as a celebration of the the anniversay of Prophet Moises escape along with his disciples from Pharaoh and his soldiers who end up perishing in the sea. Prophet Mohamed then ordered Moslems to fast that day, too. After Ramadan was set as one of the 5 pillars of Islam, fasting that day was no more mandatory but was still recommended by the Prophet along with the day before, that is the 9th and 10th of Muharrem.

Now my question is: Given that the 10th of Muharrem is a date of the Hijri calender, in which calender Jews recognize that date?. Does the Hijri calender coincide with a Jew calender for that specific day or is there a formula that set that day for both religions. I also wonder if the Jews still fast that day.

Baba Salem:
I have to thank you about your kindness. But let me tell you that I'm not an encyclopaedia.I'm just trying to transmit what I witnesses, what I read and what others told me.
I forgot one important thing about the couscouss of 3achoura.It has to be made of dried vegetables(chikpeas, broad feve, dried grapes(zbib), dried oignons ,dried tomatos and dried meat (al gueddid)).For the other secret women'stuff like mokh dba3,lssan la7mar,9alb namla or ovaries of namoussa,I let them for "assa7arat" :))))))))))
But over all,I have to emphasise on what we have to distribute at the dawn of 10th Mo7arram:Water to drink in the very small flask made of clay and plenty of karmouss(chri7a).Yes al karmouss my brother lollllllllllll.Take care.

3abirSabil, Ta7yat 7arra lik wel s7ab Raioo Kulhum!

For me your sense humor remain at the top of your qualities. At two occasions I really enjoyed. But you are more than that man. You are also an encyclopaedia. The raw information you brought about 3achoura as celebrated in a Sunni Maleki Morocco is so rich. You even mentioned rituals that seem to go way before Islam.

The most striking are the rituals observed in the Bled, particularly those related to Herrma Taych Taych or Boujloud or Bou Seb3 Btayen, and those related to women tactics to get bigger margins of freedom from their husbands at the occasion and those related to
Baba 3ayshor burial, and many other interesting aspects you mentioned in your rather note than comment.

It would be very interesting if you could detail each one of these subtopics, each time in a separate comment. Through our interactive comments on each subtopic we would complete full coverage before moving forward to the next subtopic.

This was a suggestion I'm making and I wish it will be agreeable.

3achoura is known as a religious feast to celebrate:
-Eve and Adam's birthday.
-The rescue of Noé from flood(deluge)
-The rescue of Moïse from pharaoh(the crossing of the red sea)
-The day of dressing al Ka3ba.
-The murder of Hossein at Karbalaa(chiites).

But in Morocco we use to celebrate:
*Fire:the night of jumpping on cha3ala.
*Water:ditributing water to drink at dawn an throwing water on each other all the day.
*Demons and devils:wearing masks and strange cloths: during 3achoura Boujloud or Harma wears skin animal and try to frighten people who provoke him by singing:
A Harma boulima.....A harma taïch,taïch
*Witchcraft:At 3achoura,women use to make couscouss and put some stuff in it in ordre to bewitch their husband and use to sing:
Hada 3ichour ma 3lina la7kam....Alalla
3id al miloud tay7akmou rjal......Alalla
7amya,7amya
Lli ma7maha t9ta3 yeddih
*Death:
during 3achoura,children make the doll of baba 3ichour from a bone painted with henné( femur of the sheep of 3id al ad7a),they dress it with traditionnel cloths(fou9iya,tchamir,Jellaba or burnouss) then they put the doll in a box made of wood(coffin). The days after they go around with the doll to collect money(7a9 baba 3ichour) playing with "t3arej" and "trayer".At 10th Mo7arram they go to the cemetry to bury the doll(baba 3ichour) while singing:
La ilah illa allah
mat al 7awli wa dfannah
fi 9obour achouhada
Al 7awli bou9arfada
wal khoubza hiyya dada
wa ttajine houwa baba.
Then, they go back at home shouting:
Rah 3ichour mat
Rah 3ichour mat
3ichour mat oumamat
Kharjou aya labnat
3ichour boumdijja
mat oukhalla khadija.

During 3achoura a lot of behaviors are strange and look like halloween!!

A friend of mine mentioned to me that this story sounded familiar from Moutala3a.. so she was indeed right! but yes, I think this guy nails a superb sureal version! I really enjoyed his story-telling, his pace, it's so visual! of course assuming it is his own version. I particularly loved the passage that said: "da7katt elbagra, 7atta 3amshou liha 3iniha belfarmaj...!...... la7ssou la7jal..... esssghiwer!" .. seriousely, the visuals in this scene are so powerful!

So what strange and crazy things happen during 3ashoura?

I find intersting this new version of "Ouklatou al Batatess" writen along time ago by our beloved teacher Ahmed Boukammakh in "silssilat I9ra2,al jouz2 attani lil 9ism al ibtida2i al Awal".I'am proude to have all his books.Mr Boukammakh is dead in a hospital at Marseille(France) because of a stupide "nosocomial infection".Shame on us and God bless his saoul.
About Halloween,I would like to share the meanings and the strange and crazy things that use to happen during 3achoura(Moroccan Halloween) In differents towns of Morocco.
